The Shrinking 5 Day Review Period

28 05 2009

Politifact at the St. Petersburg Times has been keeping a meter running on Obama’s promises.obameter_promiseBroken

Most notably broken is the Obama administration’s promise of transparencyin allowing the public to review for 5 days any pending legislation before Obama signs it.

The credit card bill of rights is the latest bill to be rushed through before the public can digest it. Or even find it on the website.

REPEATABLE: Image is everything. By saying he wants transparency in government, people believe it, even though he is not delivering.

Unemployment Is Only .5% More Than In 1992

28 05 2009

Some repeatable numbers:

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate is 8.6% as of April, 2009.

Now no one wants to celebrate unemployment, but when you hear about the “worst economic crisis since the Great Depression”, it makes you want to look at some of the numbers a little more.

So I did. The last unemployment high as large as now was 8.1% in January, 1992. When Bill Clinton was President.

It was worse in 1982 at 10.8%. When Ronald Reagan was President.

REPEATABLE: Unemployment has grown under Obama, but not to the epic proportions he continues to make us believe.

Guantanamo: Repeatable Recap

26 05 2009

Some repeatable tidbits on Obama’s promise to close Guantanamo prison in a year:

January 21, 2009: Obama suspends military commissions stopping prosecution of 21 detainees for 120 days. Says courts or civilian trials is the way to prosecute the detainees. Said that the Bush decision to have military commissions is “an enormous failure”.

January 22, 2009: Obama signs order to close Gitmo within a year. Orders interrogations must follow army manual. Announces no plan on what to do with the 350 prisoners located at the Cuba-based base. Says Gitmo needs to close because it “weakens national security.”

February 20, 2009: Pentagon says Gitmo meets standards of Geneva convention.

March 13, 2009: Obama drops the term” enemy combatant”

May 12, 2009: Obama administration said they would not support the release of detainee torture photos, after originally saying they would not fight a court order to turn over 44 photos requested by the American Civil Liberties Union.

May 15, 2009: Obama reinstates military commissions rather than civilian trials.

May 20, 2009: U.S. Senate votes 90 – 6 to prohibit funding to transfer, release, or incarcerate detainees at Guantanamo Bay to or within the United States

May 22, 2009: Obama gives National Security Speech at 10:10 a.m., minutes before former Vice President Dick Cheney was scheduled to give a speech to the American Enterprise Institute at 10:45 a.m. – trying to get edge on national security debate that the former Vice President was winning.

May 27, 2009:  49% of Americans oppose closing Guantanamo.

REPEATABLE: Obama’s announcement to close Guantanamo without a plan on how to do so is unraveling. His democratic base has just voted not to fund it and close to half of Americans oppose it.

Anti Obama beats Anti Bush

24 05 2009

You betcha this is unscientific…but when you Google “Anti Obama”, you get 99,500,000 entries.

Google “Anti Bush” and you get 46,600,000.

REPEATABLE:  Obama still polls as a popular president but you can’t ignore the growing dissatisfaction among those who want smaller government, lower taxes and a return to proud Americana.

Guess Which President Will Have The Largest Deficit?

Obama Says We Are Out Of Money

23 05 2009

In a Saturday, May 23 interview with CSPAN Obama was asked with 1.7 trillion debt and deficit of 11 trillion at what point do we run out of money? His answer:  “Well we are out of money now.”

We were out of money before he tried to “jump start” the economy with a $787 billion stimulus package.

The Congressional Budget office has a nice graphic pointing out our debt realities too, with a squiggly line going off the charts with Obama’s proposed budget. Debt held by public 509

Presidential refresher:

Jimmy Carter, 1976 – 1979

Ronald Reagan, 1980 -1987

George Bush, 1988 – 1991

Bill Clinton, 1992-1999

George W. Bush, 2000 – 2008

Barack Obama, 2009 – see line off the chart

This on the heels of a new Rasmussen survey that the biggest problem in this country is the unwillingness of politicians to control government spending.

REPEATABLE: This spending is all our fault – our American arrogance. And it is Bush’s fault. Whatever it is, it surely cannot be Obama’s fault. Stock up on sugar and canned goods – inflation is coming. And we have not even started paying for Obama’s national healthcare plan.

Regaliagate: Obama Was Wearing the Wrong Hood

19 05 2009

Got confirmation today from the Coordinator of Commencement at ASU – their Bookstore made a mistake and Obama was wearing the wrong color hood at their Commencement. They had two sets of regalia prepared – the ASU regalia that he wore, and also a black robe with Harvard hood – which is appropriate. The ASU regalia was chosen and by then, the mistake of blue hood (for Ph.D.) was too late to correct (he should have been wearing purple – for his earned law degree).

REPEATABLE: Does a White House protocol office exist? The White House should have the President prepared for every situation, everywhere, everytime.  They really can’t risk that they show up anywhere and not have the proper attire, food, microphone or any other detail not covered.
